Sigh....It's the First Day of School
We interrupt Chicken Week! to report that Ben has officially started school.
Breath Beth. Just breath.
*sniff* *sniff*
It's only been an hour, and Harrison and I are staring at each other like "What do we do now?"
You see, Ben's the entertainment.
On the other hand, I did get to drink a hot cup of coffee for a change this morning, while also getting in some cuddle time with the little one, and some extra blogging time.
You know Harrison is an excellent shopping buddy.
Oh...now there's some possibilities.
Note: Ben just returned from school, and had a great time! I knew he would.
Slowly seeing the silver lining of having school aged children,

So any chances of Ben becoming a vegetarian are out the window.
Someone get that boy a moist towelette!

So Grown Up
Just some snapshots of my favorite almost four year old. That would be Ben, if you were wondering. :)
His favorite thing to do like daddy.
A mini-date with best bud London. Trying to impress her with his superior listening skills.
Love his hamming-it-up smile. It always consists of leaning head to the right and saying "Cheese!"
Olan Mills would be so proud.
So peaceful, and now mama gets a breather. Yeah me.

So Very Ben
Just a picture of Ben reading the Sunday paper inserts with his swim goggles on. An ordinary day in the creative world of a three year old. Please disregard the fact that he is without clothing (again), at least the paper is keeping him modest. ;)

Jesus Texts Me, This I Know
Ben: Momma, Jesus texts me.
Me: What, Ben? Ummm, I don't think Jesus texts you.
Ben: Yes Momma, Jesus texts me.
Me: Ben, you don't even have a cell phone, how can Jesus text you?
Ben: Yes he does! He texts me from monsters and bad guys! Jesus texts me!
Me: I'm sorry Ben. You are right. Jesus protects you!
Ben: Yes, Jesus texts me.

Five O'clock Shadow
Ben loves to do anything that his daddy does- so I thought a play shaving kit would be a perfect gift for his birthday. I was right, he loves it! He begs us to let him shave everyday. Little does he know that a daily shave will probably be his fate in the next 15 years or so. Until then, he's having fun pretending to be just like his daddy...
Three is the Magic Number
I bet you know where this blog is going. Oh boy...holding back the tears, my baby is three. I have been prepared for this moment for a while as Ben has been talking and reasoning like he's 18 for most of his two status (in which there have been many times that I have had to remind myself that he isn't older). But still, facts and dates don't lie, he is officially three. I won't bother with statements like "where did the time go" and "I remember when....", but in the tradition of bragging about my offspring I will go ahead and share some stuff that I like about my little fellow. Here it goes....
He is a great alarm clock and a creature of habit. Almost every morning I feel about thirty pounds dragging over me to get to the center of the bed. Darrel or I hand him the remote and juice and he makes himself at home. I laugh a little inside when he nudges me to take his cup and place it on the night stand. Men. Always cleaning up for them, even in my sleep. But my favorite mornings are when he takes out one of my earplugs and whispers "I love you mommy" in my ear, or "Can you please put on Dora?".
He loves his little brother. Loyal does not even define what Ben is to Harrison, it's almost motherly. Oh, he feels alright taking toys from Harrison and pushing him around a little bit, but others beware because Ben will give you (me) a stern talking to if he feels that Harrison is being hasseled (disciplined) in some way. It is a dynamic that I have never experienced before (I'm an only child), but it is very sweet to see a big brother in action.
He likes my cooking. Everynight when we sit down for dinner Ben flatters me with kind words about my culinary skills. He says stuff like, "This is a good dinner mama!", "Delicioso!" (thanks to Dora) and "Wow, how'd you make this?" He knows the way to my heart.
The boy has got some great dance moves. Always has. At age one he could do the robot seamlessly, and now he is perfecting his twirling which pleases Darrel so. I love the dance parties we have in the kitchen before I start making dinner. Some of my most favorite moments are watching Ben goofily dancing around, smiling his biggest smiles, and giggling up a storm. Just FYI, Ben's favorite song to dance to is Harry Belafonte's "Jump in the Line"- think Beetlejuice. It's a crack up hearing him say, "Shake your body" and "Ok, I believe you."
He's cool like that. He uses great phrases like "Oh snap!", "Crackalackin'", and "That's whack!" And he uses them appropriately, which makes us even more proud.
He loves to read his bible. We started reading it to him more regularly when he moved into a big boy bed over a year ago and now it has become a nightly ritual. I mention this because it is so neat to hear Ben ask us to read a bible story to him at bedtime, and for him to now recognize the stories and characters. What's more rewarding is hearing Ben talk about what he's learning in bible school and to see his growing understanding of how big and wonderful our God really is. There are some nights where Ben will ask if he can stay up a little longer to read his bible- I mean how do you say no to that? My prayer for him is that his interest will keep growing, and growing, turning into a strong and loving relationship with the Lord.
He is a little me, unfiltered. I always wondered what I must have been like as a child, and now I get to see it firsthand. Like me, Ben is very passionate (stubborn), convicted (stubborn), and independent (stubborn)- but at a three year old level. :) But he is also very sweet, kind, and compassionate. He likes to verbalize how he feels now too. Somedays you'll hear him say very grumpily under his breath, "I'm not happy!". But more often then not he loves to pour out compliments to us and express his love. Darrel and I have commented to each other how we love it when Ben says "I Love You" in our ears when we are helping him get dressed- melts me every time. With all that conviction and love- I know he's going to go far in life. Maybe he'll be a preacher like his daddy. :)
Well I better save some stuff to write about later, because of course I could go on and on. So in closing, check out these pictures of Ben on his last three birthdays. They grow up so fast- sorry, got to say it. :)
Ben's first birthday. We took him out for a special breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants. If I remember right he didn't take one bite of that pancake. The love affair with pancakes had not begun yet.
Ben's second birthday. In the midst of his "Little Einstein" party. He was delirious from happiness that day. The kid loves a good party.
Ben's third birthday. Again, the special breakfast out. It's a tradition now. This time he ate all of his breakfast. What a good kid.
Here's to you Ben! Happy Birthday baby boy! Love, Your Mama

Elvis Sighting
Darrel and I decided to take the boys out this Saturday for a little lunch after some errands at the new Spangles here in town. None of us had ever been, so we thought it would be a fun new thing for Ben to see, as Spangles is kind of known for it's "fifties" atmosphere with fun golden oldies music playing and bright colors everywhere. We were right, Ben would see new things. This is what took place in the first two minutes after we arrived into a very busy lunch time crowd:
Ben: Wow Mommy! This place is really cool!
(Ben then turns around to see a giant 9 ft. Elvis holding a guitar in his famous "Elvis-like" stance if you know what I mean without having to spell it out. I'll give you a hint...it rhymes with Elvis.)
Mommy: Uhhh...Ben let's get in line.
Ben (running up to Elvis and pointing while shouting really clearly): Look Mom! Look Mom! It's Jesus! Mom, it's Jesus! Do you see him! Wow! That's cool! Jesus is here!
Needless to say, we had a good chuckle before gathering Ben and leading him back to the line to order where we had to break the news that Elvis wasn't Jesus, and so on. I think we only confused him more. Never a dull day around here. :)

Quote of the Day
Ben: Mommy, is my birthday this year?
Mommy: Yes Ben, your birthday is this year.
Ben (jumping up and down): YEAHHHH!!!!
Ben's birthday is Jan. 25th- but even if it weren't so close, I think he would still be excited that he was going to have a birthday some time this year. :)

Squints
Darrel and I saw Avatar last night in 3D (it's awesome), and afterwards we decided to keep our special 3D glasses because we knew that Ben would enjoy playing with them. We were right- but I think Darrel and I are enjoying them more than Ben because he looks so hilarious (I mean adorable) when he wears them. I promise you he looks just like Michael "Squints" Paladouras from the movie "The Sandlot". Let me know if you agree! Check him out:

We Live in a Zoo
We are sick, and very, very bored. So, today I decided to reach beyond my list of mundane activities and do something different and fun with Ben while Harrison napped. Everyday Ben has been asking to go to his favorite place on earth, the zoo. I have tried to tell him that it is too cold, that the zoo is closed (parental lie) and that we are too sick, but he wasn't having those excuses anymore. So given that we have a bazillion animals toys in this house we made our own zoo- The Sears' Zoo! First, Ben and I went through each toy box to find animals that we would see in a zoo. Ben was very particular about which animals made the cut. I wanted to throw in Mickey Mouse, but Ben put the kabosh on that saying he has never seen a mouse at the zoo. I was tempted to tell him about them being snake food, but decided to leave it be. So after we rounded up all of our animals, which Ben called scavengering, we then divided them up into the appropriate exhibit catergories, i.e. petting zoo animals, water animals, primates, and so forth. After the setup the zoo was ready for visitors, Ben got his zookeeper uniform on and I made sure I had my zoo pass and camera ready. This is what I saw....
I was welcomed by this very hi-tech and artsy zoo sign.
The first exhibit I visited was the primates. I was impressed that a gorilla, a blue one at that, was living with the monkeys. Zookeeper Ben informed me that this gorilla was very kind and that Curious George was his mommy. Nice.
Next I visited the bears, who so kindly allowed ZK Ben to sit with them while he explained all about their habitat (which just so happens to be a leopard print Snuggie. Impressed?)
Now I know I told you that Ben was pretty discriminatory when it came to what kind of animals were allowed in our zoo, but we decided "collectively" that it would be pretty darn cool to be the only zoo in the world to have a "live" pre-historic exhibit. Plus, we were desperate for some reptiles. When I inquired what they ate, ZK Ben informed me that they enjoyed strawberries.
The petting zoo...
The water animals. Check it out our zoo has the sassy hippo Gloria from the movie Madagascar.
The ferocious lion...
The purple elephant exhibit. At this point I believe that ZK Ben was checking out of our pretend zoo time, as he informed me that the animals were getting tired so I must leave soon.
I think ZK Ben just wanted to take his fifteen minute snack break. :)
Until next time!
